Essential Baby Articles

June 22nd, 2011

Are you pregnant? How far along are you? As an expecting parent, there are a lot of things that you should prepare before actually giving birth. Trust me, it is better to be prepared way before your actual due date. In this article, I am just going to talk about some of the baby essentials to arrange beforehand.

First of all, if it’s almost your due date, there’s certainly no need to panic. Take a deep breath and relax. You are more effective when you are calm. Start with your house. What do you think your baby will need once he or she is there? A bassinet? Or a crib, maybe? Your baby is fine sleeping in a crib from day one. Just make sure that there is no extra beddings or pillows that may harm your baby. If you want your baby to be close to you then a bassinet is very convenient as it can be moved from room to room.

For some parents, they like to sleep with their babies beside them. Co-sleeping is fine but make sure that you are well aware of your surroundings and that the baby is well-guarded from falling out of bed. Also, studies show that it is very advisable to put your baby to sleep only on their backs. Remember that your baby’s safety should be a priority at all times.

You probably are wondering if you should breastfeed or not. From my experience, breastfeeding is the best. Actually, it should be done by every mother. But of course, if you don’t have milk then it’s going to be bottle-feeding for your baby. Formula is also great, you know. I am just saying that if you can nurse, then there should not be a question. Go ahead and nurse. It’s good for you and your baby emotionally and physically. If you decide on nursing, be ready with breast pumps and bottles. This is advisable if you are a working mother and also, if you are going out and you’re not comfortable nursing on public. Should you decide for formula, you should ask your baby’s pediatrician on which formula is best for your baby.

Diapers. This is one of the most important baby essentials out there. You can never have too many diapers. But of course, your baby is sure to grow fast therefore you need to be careful on buying. Newborn diapers are really small so my advice is to buy just 4 packs of them. If you’re going organic, you may want to check out some of those cloth diapers.

Baby clothes are important, too. Here’s a quick rundown of the items I found most important with my children. But of course these details will depend on the climate and the season! I prepared 14 onesies for quick cloth changing. They are also great for layering if you are worried that your baby is getting too cold. 3 pairs of soft cotton pants, 2 sweaters, one thick and one thin and 7 baby sleep gowns/sacks which are nice for using through the nighttime. Socks, booties and mittens are very important with your newborn too. Mittens are necessary to keep your baby from scratching his or her face. You’ll need all the bathing and grooming essentials like baby shampoo, baby lotion, baby nail clippers, an emery board, an aspirator for cleaning little noses, diaper cream in case of a rash, and a soft bristle brush for combing hair. If you want, you may also buy one to two cute outfits for your baby to wear when going home from the hospital or for some nice, cute pictures. These numbers, of course, are all based from experience.

After giving birth from the hospital (if you chose the hospital over home birthing) then you may want to buy a safety carriage for your baby to be placed in your vehicle. There are so many different booster seats available in the market. If you are looking for convenience, your best bet is to buy the infant seat only, which is generally good for up to 20 pounds. If you’re looking for a way to save some money and extend the length of time in the seat then I recommend buying a convertible car seat which will be applicable for your growing baby.

Your baby won’t need any toys for a while. Should you decide to invest in them, I recommend black and white toys with bold, simple designs. Toys that play soothing music are also nice for keeping baby calm. Also, you may also check out those colorful mobiles as these will help your baby stimulate his or her senses.

Baby Teething Solutions

June 21st, 2011

Is your baby getting cranky and fussy for no apparent reason? Or maybe he or she is experiencing sleepless nights and loose bowels? Well, the good news is, your baby may be starting to teeth. The not-so-good-news is this period will be a challenge for you and your baby. But not to worry, this article is centered on some baby teething solutions that are proven to be effective. Being a mom of 4 children, I have tried almost everything to ease the process of baby teething. Each of my babies’ experience is unique and it definitely required different ways to make it easier for them.

Nowadays, there are lots of oral care products that are designed for babies. For some babies, this solution works well. In fact, for some it is the only solution needed. However, for my children, this solution alone was not sufficient.

I talked to my babies’ pediatrician and when the pain is really intolerable, she advised me to give my teething baby some pain reliever. This works but, of course, like any pain reliever out there, it only works for 4-6 hours. With this solution, it is vital that you check with your pediatrician first. Avoid giving your baby any meds if not really that necessary.

Also, I refrigerate my babies’ teething rings. When the rings are cold enough, I let them chew on them. It is proven to soothe the baby’s gums.  However, I did find that a frozen face cloth was an easy and effective tool for my children to “chomp” on or rub on their teeth. The ability to apply pressure (a little or a lot) was an effective way to ease the teething pain along with the cold feeling. (Make sure that the fabric is suitable.)

Chilled applesauce, pureed peaches and even yogurt are some of the nutritious eats for your teething baby. Clean, fresh, and frozen carrots (not baby ones), are another effective teething solution, as well as frozen bagels that are cut into two pieces. Frozen orange slices can also provide a soothing relief. In fact, most hard fruits and veggies or those that freeze well, can be given to your baby as long as the child is properly watched. (Note the importance of being properly watched.)

In the end, each parent must experiment with different things until they find the combination that works best for them and their baby. The result will most definitely be different for each and every child. It may seem like this phase is going to be forever, but I assure you that it will definitely end. Also, a hug and cuddle from a parent is sure to take your baby’s mind off the pain.

Best Foot Forward – Choosing the Right Footwear for Those First Steps

June 18th, 2011

Movements are milestones in a baby’s life – as your little one grows and develops, you will find yourself measuring their progress by their means of movement.  And while crawling, standing and walking will eventually come on their own accord, choosing the right footwear for each stage of your child’s development can be a great way to ensure that they are well equipped for those big changes.

When you are looking for those first few pairs of boys’ or girls’ shoes for your little one, you will need to consider both style and substance.  Luckily with companies like Vertbaudet, which also offers a full range of boys’ clothes and girls’ dresses, you won’t have to compromise on either.

Prams Shoes for Tiny Tots

The initial choice for infants will usually be a pram shoe.  Pram shoes are soft, pliable designs that are simple made as an addition to an outfit and provide warmth for the feet.  Pram shoes are intended for tiny babies and are designed so as not to restrict the foot in any way.  The best pram shoes are ones that tiny tots are not even aware of once they are on.  If an infant seems to be struggling against a shoe then it is likely that it is causing them some discomfort and the choice should be rethought.  The beauty of pram shoes is that parents do not need to choose them for practical purposes; there are some wonderfully pretty girls’ shoes for the pram shoes stage and parent’s need never worry about these becoming soiled or sullied as they will not be used for walking!

Making a Move – Time for New Shoes

As infants begin to gain independence of motion, it can be helpful to them if their parents select an appropriate new shoe.  Many children’s shoe ranges include designs specifically tailored to the needs of a child making the transition to moving about on their own.  Toddler shoes at this stage usually feature a soft flexible sole, which allows for the feet to be used as a method of crawling propulsion.  While most children’s shoes at this age will be grown out of before they are worn out, parents in search of the most practical footwear solutions may wish to choose a design with a rubber or plasticised toe guard for crawlers, as this area of the shoe can easily become scuffed with constant movement.

First Steps – Hard Soles

When a child starts to stand on their own and is indicating that they are ready to begin to take those all important first steps, then the time has come to look at the little one’s footwear again.  Once a child is attempting to walk alone, they will need a more solid shoe that can offer them the comfort and support that they need to grow in confidence.  First walking shoes will usually feature a hard but flexible sole to aid the transition phase.  At this stage, parents should consider carefully designed features such as the fastening of the shoe, as practicality is all important if parents want to aid their little walkers.  A buckle or Velcro fastening is often preferable to a laced shoe at this age as undone laces can not only cause frustration but also present a tripping risk that can be dangerous to a tottering child in the first stages of step-taking.

Fitting is Paramount in Children’s Footwear

Children’s footwear must be supportive but not restrictive, so it is really important that parents ensure that their children’s feet are adequately measured for size and width before investing in any shoes.

Babies and Sleep

June 18th, 2011

Babies and sleep go together!

babies and sleep go together and sleep is important for babies, just as it is to us adults. But for babies, sleep is a crucial part of growing up. Doctors always say that babies grow up mainly at the time of sleeping and in this sense babies and sleep are made for each other and sleep is crucial to child development. I actually agree with this. Aside from sleep being that, babies who have ample rest and sleep are healthier and happier.

Newborns don’t have a problem with sleep yet as that’s all they do. From my experience, for the first 2-3 weeks of a newborn’s life, they only wake up when they are hungry, needs diaper changing, or when they are not feeling well. For babies, before bed time, you may want to make your home environment as conducive as possible. Make sure the lights are turned off or toned down so if ever they wake up in the middle of the night, they will feel or think that it’s still baby sleep time.

Some babies sleep best in their own room whilst other babies sleep best in their parent’s room or cradle. Some even sleeps in their mother’s lap. If you are co-sleeping with your baby, make sure that no parent is snoring. Actually, there is no right or wrong place for babies to sleep. Just always prioritize the safety and how well your baby will sleep.

Clothes for babies and sleep comfort

Your baby’s clothes play an important role when sleeping as well. There are fabrics that are not applicable for babies. So make sure that the baby’s clothes are comfy. Also, depending on the weather, make sure that the baby’s clothing is pertinent as possible. It is inevitable to change diapers at night, especially if it’s already full. Always change the diapers before sleeping. If it really needs changing in the middle of the night, then try your best to do it slowly.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, sleep is very important for babies. As a parent, you must always do your best to make sleeping for your baby as peaceful and sound as possible. Babies are different from one another. You just have to find your baby’s rhythm when it comes to your baby and sleep habits.

Baby Sensory Development

June 15th, 2011

Any development from a baby is always exciting. Whether it has something to do with his or her motor skills, speech or sensory development, it really is something that us, parents, observe with delight. Personally, I am fascinated by babies’ sensory development. In this article, I’ll talk about each of the five senses and the age that a child will begin to utilize them.

The sense of smell. The sense of smell is something that is present immediately at birth. A baby can recognize his or her mother by her unique scent. They use their sense of smell to be able to stay close to their mother. Also, a baby is able to discern between their mother’s breast milk and another woman’s milk based on scent. This is interesting as the baby cannot see clearly yet but he or she sure knows when the mother is the one holding her.

The sense of touch. This is another sense that is present at birth. A baby can feel the caress of parents immediately after birth. The mother’s soothing touch usually calms the baby. As a child grows and becomes more active, you may provide them with toys that have distinctive and various texture surfaces on them. This will stimulate their sense of touch leading them to discover and gain new knowledge about the world around them. During this exploration, an infant will, without doubt, come into a few mishaps where he or she will fall down or bump their heads on a sharp corner.

Although, some precautions should definitely be taken against these misfortunes, they will inevitably occur. These hardships are actually a good thing for an infant. They will, without question, develop a new understanding that they need to watch out for sharp corners as well as other objects that may be in their pathway. Last, but not least, hugs and kisses should be provided quite often; this will not only soothe the infant, but also enhance their sense of touch.

The sense of sight. At birth, a baby will be able to see about 10-12 inches in front of them. He or she will prefer to look at their mother’s face over all others because they feel safer and more secure with mother. Initially, the baby’s sight is blurry and they are unable to see color; only black and white. However, over time, about 2-3 weeks, their vision improves and the baby will develop better color vision. In addition, the blurry vision they had at birth, will sharpen in a few months and they will then be able to see more clearly.

Later in infancy, the baby will begin to recognize other family members, such as, the father, grandparents and even the family pet. They are also able to differentiate changes within their immediate surroundings; such as, furniture being moved around, painting a wall, or re-locating to a different home. In these cases, care should be taken to make them feel secure and comfortable within their new environment.

The sense of hearing. The auditory sense develops way before birth and is very much advanced at the time of delivery. A baby can hear their mother’s heart beat and stomach gurgles, as well as many other sounds that are outside the womb; such as the beep of a car horn, music, and voices. This is the reason the baby is able to recognize his or her mother’s voice immediately after delivery. Overall, these sounds that the baby hears while still in the womb have been shown to increase language development. Music is usually a big success with babies and infants. A baby will respond well to classical music because of its soothing nature; however, as the baby grows into infancy, they will become more partial to standard lullabies, such as “Rock-a-bye baby”. Listening to music also helps to build the infants vocabulary and will prompt earlier speech patterns.

The sense of taste. Taste buds will start to develop at around 7-9 weeks gestation. The four tastes that develop are sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. A baby will, most definitely, prefer something that is sweet tasting, such as formula or breast milk, over the salty, sour or bitter taste of anything else. For this reason, it may take several attempts to get a child to eat their vegetables. An infant is indifferent to salty tastes; they are unable to differentiate between salty flavor and other flavors until they are about 4-5 months in age. Moreover, something that tastes sour or bitter, a baby has no trouble tasting and will, most likely, spit it out immediately.

Different age-appropriate foods with different flavors and textures should be tried. An infant will put anything in their mouth just to gain a better understanding of it; therefore, it is a sizeable safety concern to keep small, sharp and all other risky objects out of their reach. This process is needed in order to facilitate growth in every child; so, try to provide toys that are safe for baby to put in his or her mouth

Although, this article discussed all five senses, as well as approximate age ranges in which the sense emerged, sensory skills will tend to progress differently for every babies. They have their own pace. You just have to make sure that, as a parent, you continue to guide and nurture your baby’s needs.

How to Choose the Right Clothes to Support Your Bump

June 3rd, 2011

Congratulations, you are having a baby!  Your shape is changing as your bump grows, and you will need new clothes that will help you to feel comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.  It is always best to buy maternity wear rather than ordinary clothes in a bigger size, as these are specially designed to support your bump and to expand with you as your baby grows.  Although you are buying for your changing shape, it is simple to buy maternity clothing online or from a catalogue, as you simply order everything you need in your pre-pregnancy size.  The extra width and stretch that you will need is already part of the design, so there is no need to spend hours out shopping when you need to conserve energy in advance of the baby’s arrival.

When considering what you need to buy, your pre-pregnancy wardrobe makes a very good starting point, as many women find they have different clothes for different purposes, so this is something to think about when choosing maternity clothing.  Typical categories might be work wear, leisurewear or weekend wear and everyday clothes, as well as anything else that you might need, for example swimwear if you have a trip planned.

Everyday maternity wear needs to be comfortable and serviceable.  Maternity leggings and cropped leggings, gathered t-shirts and a long cardigan in a neutral colour will help you to look stylish and still feel comfortable.  When choosing maternity jeans, stick to the usual cut that suits your shape – whether that is slim leg, straight leg, or boot cut.  Maternity jeans can be dressed up for an evening or dressed down to create a casual look in the same way as pre-pregnancy jeans.  Casual maternity trousers are also an excellent basic item.  Leisurewear needs to be comfortable, as you may find that you spend much more time resting in the lead-up to the birth.  Maternity yoga trousers and cardigans are an excellent place to start.

Many mums-to-be are also working, and finding suitable maternity wear to wear to work may seem a little daunting at first.  However, dressing for work when you are pregnant need not mean compromising on style.  Choose a selection of maternity jeans, outfits, straight leg trousers, blouses and tunics that can be coordinated with maternity cardigans and jackets to provide a stylish wardrobe.

When you are starting to buy maternity wear, it is very important not to forget the basics.  Make sure that you are properly measured before buying maternity bras.  Do not forget maternity briefs or shorties for the fit and comfort that you will need.  A cotton-rich maternity belt will give maximum support to your growing bump, and will keep your tummy covered.  Black is very serviceable and will complement a variety of outfits; however there are a number of colours and patterns available, so it can be a fun item as well.  By choosing two or three you can wash and wear in rotation so that you will always have one ready.

Always check with your doctor before starting any new exercise programme while pregnant, but if you are able to swim, always wear a maternity swimsuit for support and comfort.  And do not forget maternity pyjamas.  Sleep is vital for your wellbeing as your pregnancy progresses, so it is essential that you are comfortable at night in pyjamas or a nightdress that offer the right support while you are pregnant, and are also suitable for breastfeeding your baby after birth.

Feeling confident is essential for your wellbeing, which is never more important than when you are pregnant.  However, you can have a comfortable, stylish wardrobe of Vertbaudet maternity wear that will serve every aspect of your lifestyle, as you prepare for the arrival of your baby.
