How to look after yourself and your baby too

Take care of you and your child’s well-being

Taking care of yourself essentially enables you to take care of your baby. After all, if you are well, you can attend to your baby at any time you are needed. Aside from that, taking care of yourself also helps you to emotionally prepare for motherhood because you are giving yourself attention. And when you feel that you aren’t lacking in anything, this makes you give more.

Getting started

After giving birth, you need to rebuild your strength. To do this, you will need to get enough rest and proper nutrition.

  • Rest: It might seem next to impossible to get some rest when there’s a new baby around. Exhaustion is inevitable since a newborn typically wakes up every three hours and needs to be changed, fed, and comforted. While it might take months before you can clock in eight hours of sleep, take note of the following to help you get your much-needed rest:
  • In the first few weeks, have someone to help you around the housed so you don’t have anything else to do but feed your baby and look after yourself.
  • Whenever your baby is asleep, use this opportunity to get some sleep as well. These sessions might take only a few minutes at a time but these can add up throughout the day.
  • Save time by placing your baby’s bed beside yours at night for feeding. The sooner you get your baby back to sleep, the sooner you can do the same.
  • It’s nice for friends and family to visit. However, new mothers should not be obligated to entertain. Whenever you are tired or it’s time to feed the baby, don’t be shy about excusing yourself.
  • After three weeks, you can try introducing breastfed babies to bottles for night-time feeding. This way, since a bottle’s ready, someone else can attend to the baby to give you longer periods of uninterrupted sleep.
  • Nutrition: Your body has undergone so many changes while you were pregnant and when your baby was born. As such, you need time to recover and heal from these changes. And getting proper nutrition is one of the best ways you can do to achieve this. Don’t go on a diet immediately. The weight you gained built stores that your body can tap into to help in recovery. Just continue with eating properly for the mean time, most especially if you are breastfeeding. An upside to breastfeeding is that you burn so much calories by doing it that it’s like getting aerobic exercise everyday. But if you’re not breastfeeding, that’s no reason to scrimp on nutrition either. Experts suggest that those who breastfeed should eat whenever they’re hungry. Since it’s easy to compromise nutrition because everybody’s tired or so busy, simple meals is the way to go. Just don’t forget to include portions from all the food groups, most especially fruits and vegetables. If you are keen on losing the extra weight fast, you can consult the doctor regarding an eating plan that will help you shed pounds while at the same time ensuring that you have the energy to take care of your baby.

Learning from others
No matter how much you think you’ve prepared yourself, there seems to be no way to not get overwhelmed. It’s just the way things are. The best you can do is to be always ready. But sometimes, it also helps if you can talk about your feelings and concerns so you can address them. You can do this by going to your spouse or meeting friends for support. Another way you can do this is to go online and join web sites such as BabyFolk.Com, where parents can write posts about their feelings or any ideas they might have regarding taking care of their babies. Besides parents, those offering baby products and services can also post about their offerings to inform parents about their options regarding how to take care of their babies.
